Character design quarterly

I created a tutorial for the CDQ magazine 26. The article shows my character-design creative process, from the first sketches to the final concept. Working from the brief to design a team of superheroes, I explain what techniques I use to create a group of characters that belong to the same universe.

FLARE

Energetic, upbeat, and brimming with a strong personality. A sports enthusiast, her attire takes cues from the 90s aerobic fashion. Her friends always cherish her in the winter, due to her warmth, but planning a vacation in the summer can be a bit tricky.

OLD DROP

Worn out, headstrong, and quite the stickler, Old D. knows his way around and isn’t one to welcome unsolicited advice. Even when he’s aware that he doesn’t have all the answers, he typically brushes off any offered assistance. He’s a man of few words, and you’ll usually find him spending his time alone, in the pool, or at the spa.

THUNDERBOLT

Full of himself, narcissistic, and a bit of a show-off, Thunder is hooked on social media, using it to flaunt his achievements. He’s perpetually attached to his mobile device, and his seemingly endless energy keeps his battery at max. He enjoys capturing shots of everything around him, even though he often gets called out for snapping photos without permission. Underneath the digital facade, he’s actually quite sensitive.
